About the Collection

The Nevada City Box Office is pleased to host “Luminosity”, a Dance Photography Exhibition by Kristin Oliver. The Box Office is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday, from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. The exhibition will hang from May 7, 2012 through June 11, 2012. This collection features dancers from local dance company The Movement Alliance. Kristin recently reflected on her experiences photographing the company. “I first photographed The Movement Alliance in 2007 and fell in love with their elegance, strength and intellect. Because of them, I make it a point to photograph dancers whenever I can. And somehow, they put up with my camera and all my dangerous requests… My mantra? Please don’t fall.”

About the Artist

Born in Miami, Florida, Kristin Oliver has traveled throughout the Americas, Europe and the Middle East, living for extended periods in Berlin, Germany and New Orleans, Louisiana. She has a degree in graphic art and has owned her own photography studio in northern California for the last ten years.

In 2011, Kristin set aside her camera for the time being and took off for Buenos Aires to learn tango. Along the way, she swam with sharks in the Caribbean Sea, dabbled in equestrian polo, sampled many a lovely South American wine and managed to write pages upon pages of random observations whilst drinking countless cups of coffee.

She took a few photographs as well. Some habits are hard to break.

Now back behind the lens with one foot planted in Nevada City and one hand reaching towards New York City, she is riding the waves, always with an eye on the compass rose.

For more information about Kristin, please visit http://www.kristinoliver.com .

The Beatles’ Revolver is a groundbreaking album that routinely tops “Best Album” lists. The 1966 album launched a period of studio experimentation for the Beatles that coincided with the end of their concert performances. With memorable songs such as “Eleanor Rigby”, “Yellow Submarine”, and “Tomorrow Never Knows”, the Beatles pushed popular music to a place it had never been. Hosted by composer, producer and Beatles expert Scott Freiman, this popular presentation SOLD OUT last February and has been hailed as “pure MAGIC”. Volunteers are need in the Box Office and to serve as Ushers.

“It’s a beautiful touching film.” – Adam Yauch, MCA, Beastie Boys

Celebrate and honor the important men in our lives this Father’s Day with “The Other F Word”, a consistently hilarious, raucous, eye-opening, and unexpectedly wise documentary on what happens when a generation’s ultimate anti-authoritarians — punk rockers– become society’s ultimate authorities — dad’s. With a large chorus of Punk Rock’s leading men – Blink-182′s Mark Hoppus, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath- “The Other F Word” follows Jim Lindberg, 20-year veteran of skate punk band Pennywise, on his hysterical and moving journey from belting his band’s anthem, ‘F-K Authority’, to embracing his ultimately pivotal authoritarian role in mid-life, fatherhood. The film will be shown in the Osborn/Woods Hall at the Miners Foundry. Popcorn and snacks will be available for purchase, as well as a bar. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the Film will begin at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $7.00 for Miners Foundry and/or Magic Lantern Film Society Members, Students, and Seniors, $9.00 for General Admission.

Written and directed by Andrea Blaugrund Nevins and produced by Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me, The Future of Food), “The Other F Word” also features skater Tony Hawk, Art Alexakis (Everclear), Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), Tony Adolsecent (the Adolescents), Fat Mike (NOFX), Lars Frederiksen (Rancid), and many others.

“The Other F Word” strips away the seemingly odd juxtaposition of rebellion versus parenthood and shows at the end of the day, it is no longer about the struggle of you against the world; it is about your children and the sacrifices you make for their happiness. It is said once you have children, your entire world changes and you as a person change as well. Watching these men thrash out on stage to then come home and help pick out a dress for their daughter to wear to school proves that maybe you do not have to change completely, instead you adapt. Lindberg makes a telling a telling observation at the end of the film that maybe music is not the only way to try and change the world, maybe being better parents and raising better kids can help achieve that goal as well.

On Saturday, May 12, 2012, the Nevada City Film Festival and Miners Foundry Cultural Center will present “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, the second event in the “Food & Film Series” which pairs a film with a fabulous culinary experience. “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is the 1961 classic romantic comedy film starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard. Following the film is an exciting cocktail party that includes food, dancing, music, and more. Guests are encouraged to dress up their cutest LBD’s and strike a pose with their friends in our official photo both, sponsored by Stucki Jewelers!

Emily’s Catering and Cakes, an award-winning caterer based in Nevada City, will serve a delicious spread following the film which includes:

Quail eggs benedict with basil hollandaise, mini cheese souffles, buttermilk biscuit sandwiches, mini sweet and savory pastries, mini crab cakes, mini brioche French toast, ricotta and herb stuffed mushrooms, crispy chicken & waffle bites with rosemary honey, asparagus with passion fruit aioli, and an assortment of desert bites.

Both the Foundry and the Nevada City Film Festival have worked with Chef Emily Scott Arbaugh of Emily’s Catering on several previous events. We are always impressed and amazed by how flavorful, elegant, and beautiful her dishes are. We caught up with the very busy chef and caterer to get the scoop on how she came up with such a sumptuous menu for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and more.

MF: What is it you love about food so much?
Emily: Number one, I love to eat. After that I love the beauty of simple whole foods. I love the history, trends, and the culture around food. I love the creative freedom that food inspires.

What is your favorite dish to make? To eat? And why?
Favorite dish to make: toss up between pies and pot roast. Favorite to eat, the same. Why, because they are hands on and require feeling, not so much a recipe. Sometimes I don’t want to think about food, I want to feel it and visualize a beautiful dish to enjoy.

How did you come up with the menu for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”?
I considered the aspects and title of the film, the guest count, event venue, budget, and the season. I think about what I would enjoy at the event and what I think my friends would be wowed over.

As a chef, what are your thoughts on pairing food with a film?
I think that food, friends, and film are a great match. When you bring these elements together in a unique way there is sure to be merriment and conversations, full bellies and anticipation of the next party!

What do you think makes Nevada County cuisine unique?
Nevada County cuisine is simple, whole, unpretentious, seasonal, local, fresh.

After playing the Foundry last fall, Nico Vega spent several months as the opening band on Blondie’s most recent tour. Reviewer Eli Watson said of their performance: “Nico Vega demands your attention. A strange combination of Rage Against the Machine-esque guitar riffs, tasteful and intricate drumming and captivating lyrical content makes this three piece a band worth knowing about. Front lady Aja Volkman, charming one second, instantly turned into a charismatic, otherworldly being as the group went through songs “Wooden Dollls,” “Gravity” and “Beast.” Throbbing drums from Dan Epand provide a powerful base for guitarist Rich Koehler’s bluesy guitar and Volkman’s intimidating vocal delivery. Behind militaristic shouts of “stand tall” was a voice full of conviction as Volkman crooned over distorted, droning guitars, channeling her inner Janis Joplin for support.”

Don’t miss this amazing show!

The Miners Foundry’s beautiful Stone Hall was the perfect setting for the evening’s festivities. Miners Foundry staff and former caterers from the Stonehouse Hospitality Academy, Dustin Fernandez and Donald Johnson, along with the Foundry’s Event Coordinator Kat Kress and Nevada City Film Festival volunteer Jill Locks created a beautiful and elegant dining room that included fresh flowers, soft light from candles and antique chandeliers, and music from Louis Prima, Dean Martin, Claudio Villa, Lou Monte, Jerry Vale, and Rosemary Clooney. At the end of the evening it was Clooney’s version of “Mambo Italiano” that ignited a jubilant mambo line that circled around the hall with guests dancing and laughing.

Full Circle Press designed and pressed exquisite menus for guests to take home and savor the evening. Photographer and artist Darlene Freitas, owner of Freitas Studio Gallery in Nevada City, donated a stunning image taken during her three month journey of exploration and enlightenment in Italy. Mr. Stephen DeSena, President of the Nevada County Italian Cultural Foundation presided over the evening as Master of Ceremonies.

Thank you to everyone who attended; to our amazing volunteers – Molly, Warren, Willow, Chris, Gretchen, Seth, Gayle, Ed, Larry, and Jill; KNCO Newstalk 830am; the Nevada County Italian Festival; Full Circle Press, Darlene Freitas, Robert Smith and his staff at The Old 5 Mile House, the hard-working staff at the Miners Foundry and the Nevada City Film Festival! For more photos from the event go to our Facebook page.
