Grease, Grit, & Grime

In the cracks, under the floor boards, and down a deep dark alley you will find Grease, Grit & Grime. Embodying the expression “dirty blues”, this group is schooled in Mississippi Delta and Chicago blues.

Grease, Grit and Grime is one of Nevada County’s most popular live bands. The band’s specialty is getting folks out of their chairs and keeping the dance floor hot! They choose to perform songs that don’t give you the blues but, more like what Taj Mahal once said about his music, “They lift the blues up offa ya.” Their repertoire includes roots-sounding originals such as “Homeless Blues”, written by Pontiac, Michigan-born lead singer Chad Conner Crow about his experience working at a shelter, and “Grab My Heart,” “Railroad Money” and “Five O’clock” by guitarist Bob Woods. Standards from greats such as Lazy Lester, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters comprise the meat of the band’s sets.

The band features a mix of personnel from various Americana sub-genres: stylish guitarist/vocalist Seth Miner who, along with Chad was in Organic Flood, a popular Nevada County rock group in the early 2000s are two of the founding members. Local guitar wizard and vocalist Bob Woods (Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, the Surfaris, the Earles Of Newtown among others, as well as a member of the Sacramento Western Swing Hall of Fame) helps to warp the blues sound into the band’s unique style. Harmonica player/vocalist Scott Hickman (Luther Tucker, L.C. “Good Rockin’” Robinson, Troyce Key, JJ Malone, Barry Melton among others) adds depth and authenticity with his decades-long Bay Area gigging experience. THE Brett Cole (The Pyronauts, Dick Dale, Gary Hoey, Elvis Costello, Peter Tork, many more) throws a solid surfabilly bottom into the mix. Driving the powerful groove of the band is drummer Artie “Stix” Chavez, A-list Northern California blues drummer (Tommy Castro, Daniel Castro, Ron Thompson, Tia Carroll, many more) who has transplanted himself from the Bay Area to Nevada County.
Highpoints for the band include opening for and performing as “house band” for early Excello & Alligator recording artist Lazy Lester in 2009, a slot in the Polk Street Blues Festival in San Francisco in 2011, opening for Johnny Winter in 2012, and opening for Buddy Guy in 2013 as well as a slew of San Francisco, Oakland and foothills dance venue gigs since then.

So, if you feel like another mule’s kickin’ in yo’ stall, and there ain’t no use waitin’ fo’ that train, grab your biscuit roller and get your mojo workin’ – and go see Grease, Grit & Grime unleash some downright dirty blues for a guaranteed unforgettable night of blues dancing.

The Pyramids

The Pyramids formed in the later part of the 20^th century to entertain dancers.  John Girton (Dan Hicks, Maria Muldaur) and Peter Wilson (Deadbeats, 1000 Kisses Deep) share a love for blues, jazz and early rock and roll.  Their repertoire runs from Bill Haley and the Comets to Bob Dylan to Johnny Cash.  They are joined by Ty Smith on drums and Eric Menig on electric bass.

John Girton is well known for his work as lead guitarist with the group Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks. John recorded 3 albums with the group, and also wrote and arranged material for them. He was also featured as guitarist, saxophonist, clarinetist, and occasional mandolinist with the popular vocalist, Maria Muldaur for many years. His own group, the “Girtones” played a blend of jazz, swing and blues sometimes including singer Maria Muldaur as a member. John and Peter Wilson have performed as a duo since 1988.

Peter Wilson has toured and performed since 1978 in coffeehouses, colleges, trains and nightclubs across the US and Canada. He’s a member of the Deadbeats – a long running tip-of-the-hat to the music and songs of the Grateful Dead. He’s a founding member of Paul Emery’s 1000 Kisses Deep – The Songs of Leonard Cohen. Along with his songwriting cohorts, Mountain John Hilligoss and Moe Dixon, they’ve written scores of songs, toured and released a studio CD – Troubadour Camp. At home in Grass Valley, California Wilson has hosted radio variety shows and talent nights.
