Local Musicians “Stick Together” for Homeless Benefit

Seven-hour Holiday Party Showcases 45 Nevada County Musical Groups

On Saturday, December 22, Mikail Graham will present the 13th annual Night of Giving, a benefit for Hospitality House featuring dozens of favorite local musicians. This year’s theme, What We Need, was penned by the late Utah Phillips, “If we all stick together, we’ll get what we need.”

Over 45 musical groups donate their time to provide a musical sampling,  which will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on three stages at the historic Miners Foundry in Nevada City. Thirteen new acts are slated this year including Darol Anger & Emy Phelps, George Souza & Ely Rush and The New Peace Choir. Nevada County crowd favorites Beaucoup Chapeaux, Dakota Sid & Homer Wills, Ivan Najara, Kimberly Bass’s Femme de la Muse, Lolo Gervais, Paul Kamm & Eleanore MacDonald and many more will grace the stage once again.

“It’s the biggest gathering of musicians and music lovers of the year. You’ll hear 15-minute gigs and discover local musicians that you might enjoy,” explains Graham, general manager of Center for the Arts. “On this full-moon Saturday, we are grateful to raise funds for people struggling with homelessness.” KVMR deejays will announce the acts and Hospitality House guests will talk about their experience with homelessness.

Dinner at the Night of Giving, prepared by students and graduates of the Hospitality House Serves culinary job-readiness training program, will be available for $5, and there will be a no-host bar. Event-goers can also check out exclusive local products and services at a silent auction for the evening.

The suggested donation for tickets is $20, but no one will be turned away. Children ages 12 and younger are free. Every donation given at the event, beyond the ticket purchase, will be tripled by anonymous donors. So $100 becomes $300 to benefit the shelter. The performances will also be live-streamed on Facebook throughout the evening.

Tickets are available at Bread & Roses Thrift, BriarPatch Community Co-Op, hhshelter.org and at the door. Generous sponsors include Coldwell Banker Grass Roots, YubaNet, BriarPatch, SPD Markets, PE Consulting Associates, InterWest Insurance Services agent Chip Arenchild, KVMR, Nevada County Association of Realtors, The Union, Sweetland Garden Supply, Port O Subs, Chapa-De Indian Health, Whitewater Naturopathic and Caliber Collision.

For over a decade Mikail Graham has presented this evening of top local talent to help spread the good news about all the many services Hospitality House offers to homeless residents of Nevada County. Musician/producer Graham is a third-generation native of Nevada City and a founding broadcaster of KVMR. He has been coordinating musical events since the early 1970s and is currently the general manager for The Center For The Arts and a member of the Hospitality House Board of Directors.
