SUMMARY:Sue Foley: One Guitar Woman
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n \n\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \nThe Miners Foundry Cultural Center is pleased to present Sue Foley: One Guitar Woman on Sunday\, June 23 2024. Bar opens at 6:30 p.m. and the Show begins at 7:30 p.m. \nSue Foley is a virtual triple threat as a lead guitarist\, singer and songwriter. For this show\, she plays her handmade acoustic Mexican flamenco guitar for a night of mind-blowing blues that will prove exactly why she’s earned her status as a musical virtuoso. \n“Foley has a killer voice\, an impossibly alluring blend of sex and innocence to go with those blazing guitar chops.” — Philadelphia Inquirer \n“Hot licks and tasty riffs\, all inspired by classic Texas blues.” — Vintage Guitar Magazine \n  \n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \nFoley spent her early childhood in Canada\, mesmerized by her father’s guitar and started her professional career at sixteen. By twenty-one\, she was living in Austin\, TX and recording for Antone’s—the esteemed blues label and historic nightclub that helped launch the career of Stevie Ray Vaughan. \nFoley is a three time consecutive winner of the Blues Music Award for Traditional Blues Female Artist (Koko Taylor Award) in Memphis TN – 2023\, 2022 and 2020. She was also recently honored with Guitarist of the Year and Blues Act of the Year at the at the 2023 Austin Music Awards\, and the Lifetime Achievement/Blues with a Feeling Award at the 2024 Maple Blues Awards. Her album\, Pinky’s Blues took home Best Traditional Blues Album at the 2022 Blues Music Awards. \nSue Foley Live in Austin Vol. 1 (Oct. 2023) has continued to top the charts and Foley’s first solo acoustic album\, One Guitar Woman – a tribute to the pioneering women of guitar\, was released March 29\, 2024. \nFoley has toured steadily with her band\, working and sharing the stage with greats such as B.B. King\, Buddy Guy\, Jimmie Vaughan and Billy F Gibbons. She’s is the only female member of the famed Jungle Show which features Gibbons\, Vaughan\, B3 virtuoso Mike Flanigin and Chris ‘Whipper’ Layton. Her live shows are high energy\, guitar driven and steeped in the Texas blues sound she was schooled in. \n\nGet Tickets! \n\n$30 Seated Advance |$35 Seated Advance Reserved (seats closest to the stage) / Advance tickets prices close at 12am June 23.\n$35 Door\n\nMiners Foundry Box OfficeTickets available online or in person at the Miners Foundry Box Office:325 Spring Street\, Nevada City\, CA 95959Tuesday – Friday | 9:00am – 4:00pm \nContact InfoPlease contact the Miners Foundry Box Office at info@minersfoundry.org with questions. \n\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \nSUE FOLEY— LADY PLAYS THE BLUES \nBy Deirdre Kelly \nWith her painted fingernails\, Sue Foley strokes\, strums\, shakes and shimmies a six-string\, unleashing a tone that doubles as her voice\, loud\, proud\, and true. Undistorted by pedals and multi effects\, her pure and clearcut sound reflects a cascade of sparkling notes and intricate chord changes that bedazzle like diamonds\, whether on the fretboard of her signature pink paisley Fender Telecaster or on her handmade Mexican flamenco guitar. \nThere’s polish and a poet’s sense of the profound in the execution\, rising from a technical excellence rooted in powerhouse electric blues guitar and — more recently — soulful nylon-string acoustic playing\, inclusive of Piedmont finger-picking and other traditional styles. Transparent bell sounds commingle with grit and grease on the 13 albums she has put out since her 1992 debut\, Young Girl Blues. \nThere can be no doubt that Foley deserves her hard-earned status as a musical virtuoso. Developed over decades of devoted practice\, self-directed study and incessant performance (she took up the guitar at age 13\, forming her first band just three years later)\, Foley’s playing is pristine and powerful\, attracting international attention on top of an abundance of accolades\, the most recent being the Blues with a Feeling/Lifetime Achievement at the 2024 Maple Blues Awards\, and the 2023 Blues Music Award winner for Best Traditional Blues Female – Koko Taylor Award\, her third consecutive win in that category. She’s also the recipient of a Juno Award (Canadian equivalent to a Grammy)\, multiple Austin Music Awards\, Blues Music Awards\, and Trophées de Blues de France. \nOccupying the upper echelons of her art form\, Foley epitomizes what is by now electrifyingly obvious – women rock\, and they have for a long time. “I grew up with strong female musical influences like Heart\, Linda Ronstadt and Chrissy Hyde. They taught me that talent and skills were more important than looks and fluff. Playing matters.” \nThe proof can be found once again with her latest recording\, One Guitar Woman. The 12-track album pays tribute to pioneering female guitar players whose own mastery of their instruments remains a prevailing inspiration\, pushing Foley into new artistic territory. Some of the women guitarists featured on One Guitar Woman were innovators who shaped both their musical genres and their cultures. Their ranks include Maybelle Carter\, who invented the Carter scratch style that influenced Nashville legends Chet Atkins\, Carter’s son-in-law\, Johnny Cash\, and Hank Williams; Sister Rosetta Tharpe (a.k.a. The Godmother of Rock ’n’ Roll)\, whose distinctive electric guitar playing (a mix of melodic Delta blues\, traditional gospel\, New Orleans swing and rattling rock) exerted a huge influence on Chuck Berry\, Elvis Presley and Keith Richards. \nOne Guitar Woman also pays acoustic homage to a musical heritage populated by blues and finger picking guitar heroines like Memphis Minnie and Elizabeth Cotten\, and other female prodigies such as the French classical guitarist Ida Presti and the multi-talented Andrés Segovia–trained guitarist known as Charo. Once a regular on TV’s Laugh In and the Tonight Show\, Charo was the first woman guitarist Foley remembers seeing while growing up in Ottawa as the youngest member of a guitar-playing family: “She left an indelible impression on me\, and she is the reason I play Spanish guitar.” \nFor her new record\, Foley learned to play Charo’s fiery signature version of “La Malagueña” on flamenco guitar. She also taught herself Ida Presti’s interpretation of violinist Niccolò Paganini’s virtuosic “Romance in A Minor\,” slowing it down to a nuanced instrumental caress. Foley’s ingenuity is further showcased in original compositions like “Maybelle’s Guitar\,” where the Carter scratch serves to underscore the towering influence of the Carter family’s music. As well\, her deeply felt English-language reinterpretation of Mexican guitarist and singer Lydia Mendoza’s “Mal Hombre” breathes new life into this Tejano classic. \nSet for release on March 29\, One Guitar Woman represents a convergence of female power and musical mastery that breaks new ground for others to follow. “It shows a different perspective\,” Foley says. “Hopefully it will open the gates for more girls and women to embrace their place in the history of guitar. After all\, we’ve been here all along.” \n \n \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n\n Buy Tickets

DESCRIPTION:The Stinkfoot Orchestra \n“The Stinkfoot Orchestra admirably delivered all the musical virtuosity\, compositional non-conformity\,and satire of American culture that Frank Zappa distilled within his extensive oeuvre. The impression left upon driving home from this experience was one of deep appreciation mixed with laughter and amazement.” — Ted Silverman\, Jambase \nAs the iconic voice who contributed to multiple Zappa ensembles\, Ike Willis is best known as the voice of Joe from Joe’s Garage. Holding the title of the musician who spent the most years making music with Frank\, Willis’ unmistakable baritone helped breathe life into many of Zappa’s most enduring compositions over the course of 10 years and 10+ albums. Decades later\, Ike’s voice is as strong as ever and brings an immediate sense of familiarity to the music of the Stinkfoot Orchestra. \nEmploying a 6-piece horn section\, tuned percussion and 4 vocalists\, this ensemble pulls no punches -delivering the intricacies and eccentricities of Frank’s music with power\, authenticity and musical prowess. Bolstered by a few articles that brought international attention\, 2022 saw the band quickly grow a fan base throughout the Pacific Northwest – exposing new audiences to Zappa’s music and wowing existing Zappaphiles with well orchestrated arrangements that hearken back to Zappa’s (last) 1988 touring ensemble. \n  \n \nGet Tickets! | $25-$30\n\n$25 Advance General Admission / $30 Door General Admission\nAdvance price closes at 4:00 p.m. the day of the Show\nStanding / Dancing Show with Limited Seating\n\nMiners Foundry Box Office\nTickets available online\, by phone or in person at the Miners Foundry Box Office:\n325 Spring Street\, Nevada City\, CA 95959\nTuesday – Friday | 9:00am – 4:00pm\n(530) 265-5040 \n \nSafety Procedures\nThe health and safety of our guests\, staff and community is the highest priority at the Miners Foundry.  Beginning April 1\, 2022 there are no safety protocols in effect for Miners Foundry presented indoor public events.  Please click here for more info and FAQs. \nContact Info\nPlease contact the Miners Foundry Box Office at info@minersfoundry.org with questions.

Advance price closes at 4:00 p.m. the day of the show.\nStanding / Dancing Show\, Limited Seating Available\n\nMiners Foundry Box Office\nTickets available online\, by phone or in person at the Miners Foundry Box Office:\n325 Spring Street\, Nevada City\, CA 95959\nTuesday – Friday | 9:00am – 4:00pm\n(530) 265-5040 \n \nYonder Mountain String Band\nRecorded during the shutdown at Cinder Sound Studio (Gunbarrel\, Colorado) and co-produced by Yonder Mountain and John McVey\, “Get Yourself Outside” (Frog Pad Records) is a musical odyssey of string instruments and sonic textures. \n“The whole thing has always been about the energy and the connection between all of us onstage and everyone out in the audience\,” says guitarist Adam Aijala.  “And with this iteration of Yonder Mountain\, we’re really tapping into that onstage connection once again.” \nAside from the obvious nature of the new album\, it’s a complete restart for the live music industry.  Internally\, it’s also a fresh start for the group in welcoming its newest member\, mandolinist Nick Piccininni.  “Nick is an incredibly talented multi-instrumentalist.  He’s brought a whole new vibe and dynamic to the band\,” Aijala says.  “But\, at the same time\, he’s such a natural fit.” \nThere’s the usual foot-stomping melodies and sorrowful ballads that reside at the core of the Yonder Mountain signature tone.  But\, there’s also a deep\, honest sense of renewal and rejuvenation running through the heart of the record.  And\, by being back on the road\, Yonder Mountain has been taking note of its long\, bountiful journey from its foundation in 1998 to the here and now – with its 25th anniversary just around the corner. \nLooking back on those early days\, the members of Yonder Mountain can’t help but shake their heads in awe – of where it all originated\, and what the live music landscape looked like at that time. \n“When we started\, we were the only example of what we were trying to do\,” Kaufmann notes.  “You can see a bluegrass band at a rock festival now.  But\, there was a time where something like that was incomprehensible.” \nAnd it’s the fearlessness of youth 0f of being present within the serendipitous whirlwind of artistic collaboration and musical discovery – that remains a thick thread of inspiration and ambition within Yonder Mountain.  “I’ve never doubted for a second that this band wouldn’t work\,” Kaufmann says.  “That’s a wonderful experience to have known that early on – to not have fear or doubt in the creative experience.  And when you think of it\, how unlikely of a journey has this been?” \n  \n \nSafety Procedures\nThe health and safety of our guests\, staff and community is the highest priority at the Miners Foundry.  Beginning April 1\, 2022 there are no safety protocols in effect for Miners Foundry presented indoor public events.  Please click here for more info and FAQs. \nContact Info\nPlease contact the Miners Foundry Box Office at info@minersfoundry.org with questions.

SUMMARY:Mykal Rose
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n \nMiners Foundry is pleased to present Mykal Rose on Thursday\, July 21\, 2022.  Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the Show begins at 8:00 p.m. \nThe Miners Foundry offers a no host full bar and snacks available for purchase. \nFor over 25 years\, Mykal Rose has been recording and performing Jamaican music to the delight of reggae fans around the world. As a solo artist and with Black Uhuru\, the “Ruff” Rose has achieved great success throughout his career\, even as different Jamaican musical styles have phased in and out of popularity. Mykal kicked off his last world tour in 2018 reprising his Black Uhuru songbook. Miners Foundry is honored to present this veteran singer-songwriter and his unique Grammy award-winning voice to Nevada City this July! \nGet Tickets! | $30-40\n$30 Advanced General Admission (Standing / Dancing with Limited Seating)\n$35 Door General Admission (Standing / Dancing with Limited Seating)\nMiners Foundry Box Office \nTickets available online\, by phone or in person at the Miners Foundry Box Office:\n325 Spring Street\, Nevada City\, CA 95959\nTuesday – Friday | 9:00am – 4:00pm\n(530) 265-5040 \n \nMykal Rose\nMykal’s story doesn’t begin with Black Uhuru. In 1976\, Michael Rose was already a seasoned performer\, having honed his skills by performing on Jamaica’s hotel circuit. When an early incarnation of Black Uhuru (Ducky Simpson and Errol Nelson) approached Michael to join the group\, he already had several solo singles to his credit. These include the original “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner” and “Clap the Barber\,” both recorded for producer Niney The Observer\, and “Running Around” for Winston Campbell.\n\nHeartbeat reissued the set on CD (Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner\, HB 18)\, which includes the massive 12″ singles “Shine Eye Gal\,” “General Penitentiary\,” “Plastic Smile\,” and of course\, “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner.” At the forefront of the recordings and live shows was the charismatic Michael Rose\, who had incredible stage presence and a vocal style all his own. So popular was his trademark sound that singers like Don Carlos\, Junior Reid\, Yami Bolo\, and others embraced it as the “Waterhouse” sound.\n  \n \nSafety Procedures\nThe health and safety of our guests\, staff and community is the highest priority at the Miners Foundry.  Beginning April 1\, 2022 there are no safety protocols in effect for Miners Foundry presented indoor public events.  Please click here for more info and FAQs. \nContact Info\nPlease contact the Miners Foundry Box Office at kat@minersfoundry.org with questions.
