Food & Film Series Menu Features 100% Organic Goodness – Sat, Dec 15th

Saturday, December 15th the Miners Foundry and Nevada City Film Festival present their final Food & Film Series of 2012 with the hilarious family holiday comedy National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and a holiday feast from California Organics.  The series pairs a popular film with a unique dining experience.  The film and dinner, along with a full bar is served in the historic Osborn & Woods Hall, making it a lively and fun experience for the entire family.

For this Food & Film, California Organics puts an organic twist on the typical holiday feast with two sumptuous entrees including “Mama’s Meatloaf “Dinner with brown sugar glaze, garlic-rosemary potatoes and roasted veggies and the vegan and gluten free Sunshine Loaf Dinner, a sunflower seed loaf is topped with cashew gravy, garlic-rosemary potatoes and roasted veggies.  For dessert, pumpkin and apple pie, both100% organic and made from scratch, are available for purchase.

“We are proving that when other restaurants use “organic or local when possible” you can use organic all of the time,” explains Tristan McLarty, General Manager of California Organics.  “Even if that means coming up with the organic alternative on our own.”

Located in the 7-Hills-business district, California Organics is both a market and restaurant that features 100% certified organic meats, wild and sustainable caught seafood, produce and dairy products.  Eleven years ago, Chris Kysar purchased the natural food store then called Earth Song.  Deeply committed to quality, sustainable and organic food, Kysar sought certification to become a certified organic store, hence the new name California Organics.  Similar to the organic certification for food processing plants, organic stores ensure the organic integrity of the organic products they sell from the time they reach their stores until they are safely tucked into your shopping cart.

Since 2001, California Organics has grown to 40 employees. With consumers becoming more interested and educated about where their food comes from or how it is grown or prepared, McLarty prides the staff on being made up of people who have years of dinning experience that are passionate about food and knowledgeable about the ingredients in the dishes and want to share their enthusiasm for organic with the public

In addition to the market and restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, the store offers a deli with all items made from scratch, catering for parties and wedding, and is also home to the “Family Meal Deal for 4 for $19.99”.

“Nowadays no one has the time to cook like they want to,” says McLarty.  “We want to provide our customers with as many affordable take out or dine in organic options as possible.  The Family Meal Deal is wildly successful for working moms and dads or anyone who doesn’t have the time to make dinner, but wants to eat well.”

One of the popular staples of the Family Meal Deal are California Organics’ signature dishes “Mama’s Meatloaf” and the “Sunshine Loaf”.  Other dishes they are known for include their Cabo Wrap and Fajitas that features their Chipotle Sauce, a perfect blend of sweet and sour; Fish and Chips made with fresh and wild caught Alaskan halibut served with hand stamped French Fries and coleslaw; and their Bison Burger, a healthy alternative to beef.

Cali-O “Mama’s Meatloaf” Recipe

-All Ingredients 100% Certified Organic-

Ground Chuck                  8 lbs
Bread Crumbs                  8 cups
Large Eggs                        6 each
Ketchup                             2 cups
Filtered Water                  1/2 cup
Worcestershire Sauce      2/3 cup
Ground Mustard Powder   2 tbs
Ground Black Pepper         2 tsp
Salt                                         2 tsp

Ketchup                              2 cups
Brown Sugar                     1/4 cup
Ground Mustard Powder  1 tsp



Mix Together first 9 ingredients and scoop out to appropriate loaf pans. Mix together glaze and generously top all scooped out loaves.

Bake at 350 degrees until internal temperature reaches 140 degrees. Enjoy!
