Makana: Thoroughly Modern Mele

The Miners Foundry is proud to present Makana in concert on November 6, 2013.  With five albums to his credit, Makana has taken the centuries old slack-key tradition and blasted it into the 21st century, fusing it with influences from Bob Marley to the Smashing Pumpkins, and opening for Sting and Santana. His solo performance is an exhilarating ride through the breadth of slack key, folk, rock, bluegrass, ethnic and jazz, all infused with the spirit of Hawaii.  Tickets are $18.00 in Advance, $24.00 at the Door and available online, by phone at (530) 265-5040, or in person at Miners Foundry or Briar Patch Co-Op.

Born and raised in Hawai’i, Makana is an internationally acclaimed Slack Key guitarist, singer, composer, philosopher, activist and one of Hawaii’s cultural ambassadors to the world. He is considered the youngest authority on his art form and recognized as one of the top guitarists in the US (Guitar Player Magazine 2008). The NY Times calls him “A dynamic force within the style” of slack key and National Geographic Society says Makana is “Charting a new sonic frontier with deep ties to tradition”.

This young man has learned from the slack masters and brought it forward with grace.
A dynamite man and he plays the guitar like dancing with a woman.

He’s also thoroughly informed on a multitude of issues and very politically astute for a fellow of his tender years. His protest songs are just great and balance the nimble elegance of his orchestrated pieces beautifully. A well rounded and confident performer whose love of life is catching.
Safe journies ’til we see you, Makana!

We’ve been fans of Makana’s since we first saw him at the MACC in
Maui in 2003. We’re big fans of Hawaiian music and always look for Hawaiian performances when we’re there and boy, he did not disappoint! Just his barefoot self and his guitar. We saw him last December in Maui
And that time be had a percussionist and guitarist with him. Astounding.
Sat close so we could watch his fingers! He’s so good and so humble.
It’s been a pleasure watching his career develop. Just before we left for Maui we got an email informing us of this performance. So, we got back two nights ago but we get to go back for a couple of hours tonight! Yay!
