Reclaiming the Sierra Conference 2012: Green $olutions to Abandoned Mines ~ May 3-5, 2012

Community  and tribal members, leaders, regulators, recreationists, scientists, medical professionals, elected officials and students are encouraged to attend The Sierra Fund’s second annual Reclaiming the Sierra conference.  This event is the only conference dedicated to addressing the impacts of historic mining in the Sierra Nevada.

The three day conference features a full day of technical presentations on May 3, 2012, and technical tours on May 4, 2012.  Saturday,  May 5, 2012 will feature an inter-disciplinary workshop on creating new markets to encourage cleanup of abandoned mines, as well as community workshops on practical ways to avoid exposure to mercury, arsenic, lead and other toxins from historic mining that Sierra residents commonly encounter.

Highlights include:

• Scientific presentations on exemplary projects from around the country
• Continuing Medical Education training on mercury for healthcare professionals
• Applying lessons learned in other industries to clean up our communities
• Workshops for community members to learn about the risks of mining toxins on their property, and how to take action to protect their property and their health
• Strategic discussions on creating a market for clean materials including soil, gravel and gold

The focus this year is on solutions – both immediate actions that can be taken to minimize the impact on our health from exposure to toxins in our communities, and creative strategies to make cleaning up mining’s toxic legacy profitable.
