Food & Film Series: Breakfast at Tiffany’s Chef & Menu

John & Emily Arbaugh

“Food, friends, and film are a great match.  When you bring these elements together in a unique way there is sure to be merriment and conversations, full bellies and anticipation of the next party!” – Chef Emily Scott Arbaugh

On Saturday, May 12, 2012, the Nevada City Film Festival and Miners Foundry Cultural Center will present “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, the second event in the “Food & Film Series” which pairs a film with a fabulous culinary experience.  “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is the 1961 classic romantic comedy film starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard.  Following the film is an exciting cocktail party that includes food, dancing, music, and more.  Guests are encouraged to dress up their cutest LBD’s and strike a pose with their friends in our official photo both, sponsored by Stucki Jewelers!

Emily’s Catering and Cakes, an award-winning caterer based in Nevada City, will serve a delicious spread following the film which includes:

Quail eggs benedict with basil hollandaise, mini cheese souffles, buttermilk biscuit sandwiches, mini sweet and savory pastries, mini crab cakes, mini brioche French toast, ricotta and herb stuffed mushrooms, crispy chicken & waffle bites with rosemary honey, asparagus with passion fruit aioli, and an assortment of desert bites.

Both the Foundry and the Nevada City Film Festival have worked with Chef Emily Scott Arbaugh of Emily’s Catering on several previous events.  We are always impressed and amazed by how flavorful, elegant, and beautiful her dishes are.  We caught up with the very busy chef and caterer to get the scoop on how she came up with such a sumptuous menu for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and more.

MF:  What is it you love about food so much?
Emily: Number one, I love to eat.  After that I love the beauty of simple whole foods.  I love the history, trends, and the culture around food.  I love the creative freedom that food inspires.

What is your favorite dish to make?  To eat?  And why?
Favorite dish to make: toss up between pies and pot roast.  Favorite to eat, the same.  Why, because they are hands on and require feeling, not so much a recipe.  Sometimes I don’t want to think about food, I want to feel it and visualize a beautiful dish to enjoy.

How did you come up with the menu for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”?
I considered the aspects and title of the film, the guest count, event venue, budget, and the season.  I think about what I would enjoy at the event and what I think my friends would be wowed over.

As a chef, what are your thoughts on pairing food with a film?
I think that food, friends, and film are a great match.  When you bring these elements together in a unique way there is sure to be merriment and conversations, full bellies and anticipation of the next party!

What do you think makes Nevada County cuisine unique?
Nevada County cuisine is simple, whole, unpretentious, seasonal, local, fresh.
