East Forest Ceremony, Combining Concert & Ritual for a Transformative Experience

International musician, producer, and ceremony guide East Forest (“Music For Mushrooms”, “Ram Dass”) will be performing an exclusive Ceremony-Concert presented by Numinus, a mental health care company advancing innovative treatments and safe, evidenced-based psychedelic-assisted therapies.

The East Forest Ceremony-Concert is a multi-level experience where concert meets ritual, merging live music and guided meditation – including songs from the East Forest collaborative album “Ram Dass”.

As a leading figure at the intersection of music and the psychedelic therapy movement, the East Forest Ceremony-Concert takes a brain-body approach aimed towards a non-religious and yet deeply spiritual journey – a methodology grounded as much in science as in ritual and ceremony.  The music and gentle verbal guidance by East Forest will guide attendees on an inner journey toward the wellspring of wisdom within.  Through stillness and turning into one’s own self-knowing, participants will leave with feelings of tranquility, clarity and empowerment.

Numinus is building a world where everyone feels connected and whole, and are excited and honoured to present East Forest Ceremony and cultivate community around music as medicine.

On Friday, June 21, 2019, at 8:00 pm, The Miners Foundry, in co-production with Rick Ewald and Over The Ledge Productions, will present psychedelic instrumental trio The MERMEN featuring Nevada City local bassist Jennifer Burnes.

ABOUT THE SHORT FILM

The short film, “Lost and Found (the film archives of Greg Noll)” is “The quest to preserve legendary big wave surfer Greg Noll’s historic surfing footage, and a personal view of a legendary big-wave life. The film is directed and narrated by Maverick’s big wave surfer Grant Washburn. Greg Noll is one of the iconic pioneers of surfing big waves, surfing some of the biggest waves in the history of surfing. The MERMEN composed original music for the film and will perform a live concert immediately following the film, containing songs from the movie as well as other albums, including their latest release.

FANS OF…

“tribal,” “melodic,””ethereal,” “soulful,” “earthy,” “poetic,” “dreamy,” “oceanic,” “dramatic,” “beautiful,” “hypnotic”, “heavy”, “muscular,” “deep,” “emotional,” “symphonic,” “spiritual”, and” “mystical.”

The Mermen have performed with artists as varied as David Byrne, Jimmy Buffet, Tiny Tim, The Cramps, Todd Rundgren, David Lindley, The Dirty Three, Morphine, Junior Brown, Nancy Sinatra, Lee Hazelwood, String Cheese Incident, Midnight Oil, Pennywise, Rancid, Agent Orange, Social Distortion, Cake, Dick Dale, The Ventures, etc etc. .

BIO

The Mermen are an American rock band from San Francisco, California that formed in 1989. The group’s sound was originally rooted in instrumental surf and psychedelic music of the 1960s. Although their music delves into many genres, the sound is non-commercial and is mainly influenced by the band’s founder, songwriter and guitarist Jim Thomas’ modern melodic visions. The band’s music is entirely instrumental and “does a good job of defying description”, not fitting neatly into any musical genre. In concert, the Mermen always perform as a trio: electric guitar, electric bass, and drums. (Jennifer Burnes on bass, Martyn Jones on drums) Their music is rooted in the kind of reverb “surf ” music sound made by Duane Eddy, the Ventures, Dick Dale and Link Wray, and Jack Nietzshe.( i.e. The Lonely Surfer). Their sound is often described as distinctly of the American West (especially the West Coast)

During live shows, Mermen songs often morph into lengthy improvised variations on a theme a la the Grateful Dead with new pieces of music created on the spot.

The Mermen have released 12 albums and have received numerous awards for their work. The music has appeared in dramatic films, plays, commercials, documentaries, surf films, television shows, and on the radio. They have performed at the Burning Man Festival 10 years in a row.

PRESS

The Mermen have received an extraordinary amount of positive critical review from the music press – where the songs are described as “instrumental tone poems,” “sonic landscapes”, “wordless odes.”

The best Rock and Roll is poetry in motion, with or without words – and some of the best records of 1995 came without. The Mermen play an extreme brand of surf music, the black minor-chord moods of guitarist Jim Thomas are like a rough ride on the icy seas of the mid- Atlantic. Hints of Dick Dale filter through the cracked-sidewalk waveforms of Sonic Youth. But on long hauls like the nine-minute “Obsession for Men,” Thomas sounds more like Neil Young at the wheel of Crazy Horse.
– David Fricke, ROLLING STONE

Jim Thomas builds crashing waves of sound that would do Pink Floyd proud. Thomas’ unique vision has never sounded better than this….. sterling set of tone poems that swell up like the sea itself…the psychedelia dominates….Far from the calculating, cultivated rock so common these days. The Mermen’s Road Show album is a tour de force by an inspired musician following his own vision”
– Joel Selvin, San Francisco Chronicle

“… the most exciting and beautiful contemporary Hawaiian music the world knows.” ~ Maui Times

HAPA 1.jpgThe blend of HAPA’s original vocal sound was originated on a wooden picnic bench in the beautiful little beach town of Lahaina on the island of Maui in the early 1980’s.

The overriding quality of their music is one of passion, beauty, and serenity, as found in the majestic tones of the oli (chant), mele (song), and the exhilarating innovative sounds of virtuoso guitar performances.

HAPA’s recordings have infused fearless and brilliant production while weaving unique, inventive elements of sound and textures into their intricate South Pacific tapestry.

Iris DeMent & Special Guest Pieta Brown ~ Thursday, October 23, 2014

Iris DeMent ~ “Go On Ahead and Go Home”

Iris PosterThe Miners Foundry Cultural Center is thrilled to welcome back one of the most celebrated country-folk performers of her day, singer/songwriter Iris DeMent with special guest, Pieta Brown.   At the age of three, her devoutly religious family moved to California, where she grew up singing gospel music; during her teenaged years, however, she was first exposed to country, folk, and R&B, drawing influence from Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell. DeMent first began composing songs at the age of 25.

Honing her skills at open-mic nights she won almost universal acclaim thanks to her pure, evocative vocal style and spare, heartfelt song craft.

Doors open at 6:30 and the music begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2014.

Tickets are $28.00 Advance General Admission, $32.00 Door General Admission, and $40.00 Limited Reserve.  Tickets are available online, by phone, or in person at the Miners Foundry, or in person at Briar Patch Co-Op.

Iris DeMent 5.jpg“She’s the best singer I’ve ever heard.”  ~ Merle Haggard

Iris DeMent was born in Arkansas and raised in Southern California, immersed in gospel music and traditional country.  Her latest release, Sing the Delta, presents twelve self-penned compositions from an artist whose first three albums established her as one of the most beloved and respected writers and singers in American music.

With her first album, Infamous Angel, Iris DeMent was immediately proven to be a promising and talented artist.  Her 1994 follow up, My Life, earned a Grammy  nomination in the Contemporary Folk category.  Her 1996 release, The Way I Should, addressed political as well as personal themes and earned a Grammy nomination as well.

Pieta BrownPieta Brown‘s early upbringing was in a rural outpost in Iowa with no furnace, running water, or TV. From an early age she was exposed to traditional and rural folk music through her father, Greg Brown, the beloved Midwestern folk singer.

Emerging from a disjointed and distinctly “bohemian” upbringing, Pieta began performing live and making independent recordings soon after teaching herself to play guitar.

Continually revealing new layers as both a songwriter and performer, Pieta is being recognized as one of modern Americana’s true gems.

MarchFourth Marching Band ~ Friday, August 8, 2014

What is MarchFourth?

MarchFourth

The Miners Foundry is pleased to present MarchFourth Marching Band on Friday, August 8, 2014.  With a rallying cry of “Joy Now!”, MarchFourth throws itself and the audience into a swirling volcano of high-energy music and spectacle.  MarchFourth brings an energy and style that takes the live concert experience to a new level of fun, turning unsuspecting concert-goers into fans for life and transforming ordinary events into joyous occasions.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the show begins at 9:00 p.m.  Tickets are $22.00 for Advance General Admission, $26.00 General Admission at the Door, and $32.00 for Limited Reserve.  Limited Reserve includes cabaret table seating.  Tickets are available online, by phone, or in person at the Miners Foundry, or in person at Briar Patch Co-Op.

“Part New Orleans brass ensemble, part groove-heavy rock group, and part vaudevillian circus, this group unleashes such a technicolor experience that using the word ‘concert’ to describe their performance falls flat.”
~ 5820 Magazine

MarchFourth 2Aside from their one-of-a-kind upcycled vintage marching band uniforms, their 5-piece percussion corps, and the 7-part brass section, MarchFourth is far from a marching band in the traditional sense.  Their original music is anchored by funky electric bass and has been evolving into a rocking guitar and vocal driven journey, from the swamps of Louisiana to the gypsy camps of eastern Europe, to the African jungle by way of Brazil, echoing the deepest grooves of American funk, rock, and jazz.  MarchFourth’s influences are all over the map, but fans of Sgt Pepper, Duke Ellington, Gogol Bordello, Ozomatli, and Cirque Due Soleil would feel at home in the audience.

MarchFourth 3MarchFourth inspires dancing… when the audience can tear its eyes from the kaleidoscope of visual energy  (and maybe even a crowd-surfing stilter) pouring from the stage.  MarchFourth provides the opportunity to come together in joyous union with a band whose mission is to seize the moment, bring communities together, and leave everyone feeling as if the world is a better place.  Joy Now!
