“Slack key guitar music, indigenous to Hawai’i, has been around longer than the blues, and Makana is considered the greatest living player.”  ~ Esquire Magazine

Makana Photo 2Makana’s music transcends category and trend by integrating elements of folk, rock, ethnic, classical, bluegrass, jazz, traditional, ambient, electronic, and Hawaiian slack key in gentle to commanding arrangements.  The result is innovation and the charting of new sonic frontiers with deep ties to tradition.

Makana creates ground-breaking original music and reanimates classics.  Playing both rhythm and melody simultaneously while using intricate right-hand techniques in a myriad of open tunings, slack key players (they are but a handful alive today) are versatile and evocative.

“…friendly, generous, self-effacing, a little kolohe (rascally) and a flat out genius at just about any stringed instrument that can be finger-picked.” — The Honolulu Advertiser

A master of the slack key guitar, Led Kaapana has been one of Hawai’i’s most influential musicians for four decades.  His mastery of stringed instruments, exceptional picking style on slack key guitar and ‘ukulele, and extraordinary baritone to leo ki’ eki’e (falsetto) vocal range, have made him a musical legend.  In 2011, he was honored with an NEA National Heritage Fellowship.

Led is joined by longtime collaborator Mike Kaawa, Hawai’i’s finest 12 string guitar player and one of its most highly regarded musicians.  Known as “The Hawaiian Boy”, he describes his music as “Hawaiian with attitude”.  Mike Kaawa is the perfect match for Led.  Since they began performing together in the early 2000s, they have crafed a remarkable musical rapport much like jazz musicians’ improvisations with each other.
