“LORE: The Art of Story” ~ Through Saturday, May 30, 2015

dank_posterDANK and the Miners Foundry Cultural Center are pleased to announce “LORE:  The Art of Story,” Saturday, April 11 through Saturday, May 30, 2015.

The ten local artists who have been working with the Miners Foundry to activate a new, creative, and social space in The Foundry will present an interactive, social, and thought provoking show.

Invigorated by the success of their sold out field trip to “@LARGE:  Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz,” a popular KVMR radio broadcast Live from DANK, and their award winning show for the Wild and Scenic Film Festival, they look forward to sharing all new work inspired by the art of story.

“The Miners Foundry Cultural Center created this opportunity for the artists of DANK because we wanted to develop a public space for art and conversations about art and art making.

Part of a collaborative relationship with artists is giving them the space to express, while not knowing exactly what the next show will be like.

We are excited for the opening of “LORE” and to see the new work,” says Foundry Executive Director Gretchen Bond.

Some of the themes are historically familiar while others are extremely personal.

“Like a good story, this show has been deeply therapeutic for me as I’ve worked my way through a cancer diagnosis and treatment.

It’s allowed me to express the experience through art and explore my connection to other creative souls, pas and present,” says artist Moira McLaughlin, referencing her piece Bury Me in a Mason Jar.

Nancy Nelson explains that her contribution, Dearest Daughter, “evokes the beautiful and poetic letters written by my grandfather to my Mom when she graduated from high school and college, and then gave birth to all four of her children.

His letters, all starting with ‘Dearest Daughter’, were filled with stories, quotes, gentle advice, and always unconditional love.”

Wolf and the Seven Kids is a visual representation of a Grimms’ fairy tale by the same name, which is very dark, as most of the Grimms brothers’ tales were.

I related to this story with the recent birth of my second daughter and revisiting that intense protective energy which comes with mothering a new baby,” adds Cynthia Levesque.

“Seeing what the other collective members are showing for ‘LORE’, I think it’s going to be a fun, very interactive, yet moving show.”

Scheduled Events Include:

12:00 – 4:00 p.m.  ~ Coffee from Steffen Snell of Foxhound Espresso
5:00 p.m. ~ Artist Reception with no-host bar featuring sangria and craft beer from Sierra Moonshine Home Brew Supplies
7:00 p.m.  ~ Performance piece by DANK artist Joe Meade
8:00 p.m. ~ Musical performance by Halfpence and Haypenny.  Performer Sage Arias says he and Eva Riihiluoma have selected “pieces heavy with lore – a tale of a young girl whisked into the Fae realm, a 16th century ghost story, and a tune with the darkest past and association one could imagine.”

There will also be a special eBay auction of the original painting Goldie Bear by Sheila Cameron, benefiting the Miners Foundry.

“This piece was inspired by putting a feminist twist on the traditional fairy tale.

The stores we tell, the stores we pass on have a power and looking for new ways to do things is always exciting.

It seems fitting to make this piece available in a uniquely modern way to help raise money for this special building that inspires so many of us.”

The DANK Movement is an artist’s collective in Nevada City, CA.

It was founded in 2013 by a group of ten artists interested in collaboration, the rural ideal, post-Great Recession social issues, and the anti-urban aesthetic grounded in the legacy of the California Gold Rush.

The name DANK comes from the ubiquitous wet wood smell that permeates Nevada City, which is situated on the banks of Deer Creek.

It is also a nod to one of the area’s premier exports:  cannabis.

And it’s an acronym for Do Art Now Kids.
