Volunteers are needed for the following events:

Dark Star Orchestra, Wednesday, October 10, 2012
Performing to critical acclaim worldwide for over 13 years and more than 1800 shows, Dark Star Orchestra continues the Grateful Dead concert experience. Their shows are built off the Dead’s extensive catalog and the talent of these 7 fine musicians. On any given night the band will perform a show based on a set list from the Grateful Dead’s 30 years of extensive touring or use their catalog to program a unique set list for the show. This allows fans both young and old to share in the experience.   Volunteer half the show, then dance the rest!  If DSO isn’t your type of show, this is a great opportunity to volunteer for 6 hours and earn a complimentary ticket for another Foundry sponsored show.  Many Volunteer positions still available.

Fierce and addictive: The music of Nico Vega

Nico Vega singer Aja Volkman

Playing since the age of 14, Nico Vega founder and guitarist Rich Koehler said he has become addicted to playing live. The band, which includes lead singer Aja Volkman and drummer Dan Epand, has travelled far and wide performing it’s fierce brand of rock. And the bands recent CD dubbed “Nico Vega,” is receiving great reviews.

But don’t typecast them yet. Whatever the band’s brand, it too is addictive.

Lead singer Aja Volkman’s pipes are well-honed. Her singing has been referred to as “sexy” and “enchanting.” Is this while she’s flying through the air, diving into the crowd?

Nico Vega was frequently compared to the White Stripes, since it didn’t have a bass player.
That has changed recently with the newest band member, bassist Jamila Weaver. “I love it,” said Koehler about the addition. “It really brings the band to a new level. The record after this one is probably gonna be more crazy.”

Nico Vega’s music is rooted in the band’s willingness to really explore it’s own uniqueness. “As long as you love it yourself … If you love it, put it out there,” said Koehler. “It’s really what matters … as long as you stand behind (the music). That’s got to happen first before you share it with anybody.”

Koehler lists the Miners Foundry among one of the band’s favorite places to perform, along with venues in San Francisco such as the acclaimed Bottom of the Hill.

“(The show) is gonna be exciting,” said Koehler. “You guys have a really cool community up there, and we hope to stay awhile.”
