Escaped Alone | Deer Creek Bar

Both performances are sold out.  Please email our Box Office at [email protected] to be added to the waitlist.

Sierra Stages and the Miners Foundry are pleased to present a play reading of Escaped Alone, written by Caryl Churchill and directed by Sands Hall, at the Deer Creek Bar at the Miners Foundry Cultural Center on Thursday, June 3 and Friday, June 4, 2021. The evening features local musicians Randy McKean and Murray Campbell who will perform prior to the play reading, and local actors Trish Adair, Mary Baird, Lorri Holt, Sharon Winegar who will perform Escaped Alone.

Originally scheduled as the third production of Sierra Stages’ 2020 season, Escaped Alone is an inventive and though-provoking work.  Set in a serene garden, three old friends are joined by a neighbor to engage in amiable chat-with a side of apocalyptic horror.  The women’s talk of grandchildren and TV shows breezily intersperses with tales of terror in a quietly teetering world where all is not what it seems.

The evening begins with Randy McKean and Murray Campbell performing light classical versions of British pop of the 60s (think “Downtown”, “You Really Got Me”, “I Know a Place”.)  After a brief pause for chat and refreshments, they’ll be joined by four distinguished local actors, Trish Adair, Mary Baird, Lorri Holt, and Sharon Winegar, to perform Escaped Alone.  Directed by Sands Hall.

The play’s title, Escaped Alone, is taken from the epigraph of Melville’s Moby Dick:  “I only am escaped alone to tell thee”, which aptly describes the narration of that novel.  However, the phrase comes originally from the Book of Job:  it’s uttered by four separate messengers who come to tell Job of his terrible losses.  How this connects to Churchill’s brilliant and funny (and dark and timely) play is something we hope the audience will be talking about for some time.

FRIDAY, JUNE 18 TICKETS

Sierra Stages and the Miners Foundry present a play reading of Italian American Reconciliation, written by John Patrick Shanley and directed by John Ficarra, in the Osborn/Woods Hall at the Miners Foundry Cultural Center.  The performances will be held on Thursday, June 17  and Friday, June 18, 2021.

Huey Maxmillian Bonfigliano has a problem.  He’s still stuck on his ex-wife, even though she tore out his heart three years ago.  He feels that he can’t be a man again until he gets her back.  Enlisting the help of his best friend Aldo, Huey tries to woo her back just one final time in this fanciful, light-hearted, and zestfully comic play.

John Ficarra directs the reading of this modern-day folktale by the writer of Outside Mullingar (Theater By the Book 2020), Doubt (winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award), and the screenplay for Moonstruck.
