The 16th Annual Altar Show: Renewal & Remembrance will open on Saturday, November 9, 2013. The show features altars dedicated to persons, memories, concepts, and causes. The annual free and non-juried exhibition will be held November 9 through November 17, 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. daily. The exhibit is held at the Northern Mines Building, Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, CA.
Exhibitors range in age from 8 to 84, and offer a broad spectrum of altars. A variety of media is used, altar themes are limited only by the imagination of the altar maker. The work can be inspiring, mysterious, insightful, humorous, informative, or even outrageous.
Some altars embrace the tradition of “Dia de los Muertos”, made to honor deceased loved ones. Other altar makers choose to convey an array of personal and contemporary themes including peace, the environment, and social issues. Although the works are not primarily religious in nature, the event provides altaristas and viewers a sacred space to renew and remember.
The public is cordially invited to attend the 2013 Altar Show. Two special events have been added this year. A Silent Auction will be held on November 9th & 10th. The auction will conclude at the Public Reception held on Sunday, November 10, from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. A “Poetry and Coffee Evening” will be held on Thursday, November 14 at 7:00 p.m. Local poets Chris Olander, Judy Crowe, Deborah Edwards, Gregg Schiffner, Kathryn Smith, and Tom Wilson will read their works around the theme of renewal and remembrance.
The Altar Show is held in association with the Miners Foundry.
