About
“While it’s not hard to compare Ross’ storybook folk and nasal-y vocals to Dylan or Guthrie, there’s a controlled chaos that defies genres and lets the work paint pictures instead of easy comparisons.” – Sacramento News & Review
Beginning with his debut album, On the Hallelujah Side, Ross displayed a facility for Americana-based musical forms and rambling lyrics that tended toward double-entendre and allegory. The apocalyptic wit of Bob Dylan and biblical gravity of William Faulkner are equally valid lyrical touchstones. When he sings the song “Jack Kerouac” from the 2006 album Beginner’s Blood, it’s easy to see how the writer’s concept of “free prose” influenced Ross’ freewheeling lyrics. While his early work was inspired by dark, redemptive tales like the film There Will Be Blood, his 2008 album Shapeshifter revealed a lighter side of his personality. Entering his late 20s and discovering the peace of raising a family, Ross felt the drive to project more positive imagery. “Once you reach 25 and you’re still alive, you’re not as angst-ridden,” he says of the time. This new-found levity gave him the leeway to experiment with different lyrical and musical forms. While much of Ross’ music focuses on the mythical America, with it’s broken dreams, bucolic family moments, and unprecedented military power-there is a sly thread of humor running through his work that’s often underestimated. Song titles like “The Beast Of Both Worlds,” “Enemy Of The State Of Mind” and “In Through The Out Of Order Door” hint at a playfulness that’s often lacking among modern songwriters.
One of the most prolific songwriters of his generation, Ross has written and recorded hundreds of songs that have spanned his eleven solo albums, a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration with Sacramento experimental rock group Hella for their 2007 album There’s No 666 in Outer Space (Ipecac), followed by the power psych project Solos with Spencer Seim of Hella, which produced Beast of Both Worlds (recorded and produced by the legendary Guy Massey), and finally the power-chords and fuzzed-out riffs of the classic-rock inspired trio El Dorado.
Farrow and the Peach Leaves
Farrow and the Peach Leaves was founded in 2016 by three buddies who liked getting together to play country music on Wednesdays. Graham Knibb and Zach Peach began recording some songs and brought Leif “Swamp Dog” Bo Bonfils in on bass guitar and vocals. The project quickly grew into a full blown band. Now with the addition of Keith Knibb on guitar and Hunter Jones on keyboard and lap steel, Farrow and the Peach Leaves has developed into a sought after act. With two albums under their belts, and a broad repertoire of originals and covers, Farrow and the Peach Leaves always brings a party to venues of all sizes. Their music is heavily influenced by their native Sierra Foothills and the lives of the people living there. Farrow and the Peach Leave’s make music for fans of Country, Rock and Roll, and all that falls between.
This will be the band’s 2nd time on the Miners Foundry Stage – they recently opened for Dead Winter Carpenters. Their album “Honeyslides” is a harder take on the Sierra Foothill country sound that Farrow and the Peach Leaves tapped into with “Country Wednesdays.” With driving, locomotive rhythm, soaring guitars, and back-porch style harmonies. Honeyslides runs the country spectrum, from smoky honky tonks and strung-out drug runs to the particular California country grief only found in Nevada County.
