boom

Sierra Stages and the Miners Foundry will present boom on Wednesday, November 13 at 7:30pm.  Written by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb and directed by Cosmo Merryweather, boom is the next installment of Theater By the Book, a series of informal play readings for the community.

“Sex to Change the Course of the World”— a grad student’s online personal ad lures a mysterious journalism student to his subterranean research lab under the pretense of an evening of “no strings attached” sex. But when a major global catastrophic event strikes the planet, their date takes on evolutionary significance and the fate of humanity hangs in the balance. Will they survive? What about the fish in the tank? And who is that woman pulling levers and playing the timpani? An epic and intimate comedy that spans over billions of years, boom explores the influences of fate versus randomness in the course of one’s life, and life as we know it on the planet.
Theater by the Book’s reading of boom is directed by Cosmo Merryweather, who doubles as a member of the cast that also includes two terrific actresses, Kate Haight and Michaela King. As an added bonus, stage directions for the reading will be read by Danny McCammon.

Two sisters (and a melancholy mastiff) live in a ruinous old house on the bleak and fog-enshrouded English moors, dreaming of love and power. When a hapless governess (and a crash-prone moor-hen) arrive out of nowhere, lies are unmasked, loyalties shift, and all are set on a strange and dangerous path until finally – someone reaches the breaking point! A mysterious, menacing, and savagely funny mash-up – as though the Brönte Sisters had been dropped into a comedic production of a play by Samuel Beckett.

With Anthony’s father threatening to disinherit him and a land feud simmering between their families, Rosemary has every reason to fear romantic catastrophe. ABOUT

Based on the best-selling book by Cheryl Strayed and adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos, Tiny Beautiful Things personifies the questions and answers that “Sugar” was publishing online from 2010-2012. When the struggling writer was asked to take over the unpaid, anonymous position of advice columnist, Strayed used empathy and her personal experiences to help those seeking guidance for obstacles both large and small. Tiny Beautiful Things is a play about reaching when you’re stuck, healing when you’re broken, and finding the courage to take on the questions which have no answers.
